Description

Hi all,

Well spring has sprung and looking outside at the sunshine, it makes me wonder - was there really a winter at all?

Looking at rainfall for Busselton we can see that it was pretty hit and miss, with 83.8mm for June, 118.60 for July and 89.20 for August for a total of 291.60mm. This compares to the long term mean average (1877 - 2010) of 451.4mm for the winter months at Busselton, so it was certainly on the dry side!

None the less, there is still some water in the streams and wetlands and GeoCatch have some fantastic events to make the most of the Spring time splendour in this biodiversity hotspot!

Saturday the 11th September / Freshwater Mussel Seminar - The first event for biodiversity month is the Freshwater Mussel Seminar at the Equinox Café in Busselton on the 11th September beginning at 10am. Michael Klunzinger from Murdoch University will be highlighting the important role that these fascinating mussels play in our freshwater streams and how we can assist their survival. This free event will also feature a delicious morning tea. Bookings essential.

Saturday the 18th September / Urban Wetland Gumboot Wander  - Held in Busselton's New River Wetlands, this is certainly a walk on the 'wild side'. Participants will be required to bring their gumboots and will experience the wonders of Busselton urban wetlands up close and personal! Learn about what lives in the wetland and what function they serve in ensuring Geographe Bay stays in good condition. This free event will be led by GeoCatch Wetland Officer John McKinney. Gumboots are essential, as is a reasonable level of fitness and children must be aged above 12.

Saturday the 2nd October / Carbunup Wildflower Walk - The Carbunup Reserve is one of the biggest areas remaining of southern Marri and Banksia woodlands and is the only known area where this vegetation type is found intact along a river. The walk will be lead by local flora enthusiast Jen Stevens who will highlight the spectacular wildflowers. Bookings essential.

Places are limited and bookings are essential for these events, please ring 97 810 111 or visit www.geocatch.asn.au to book.

Cheers,
